Overview

Sustain-A-Look is a sustainable fashion brand based in Boulder, Colorado. They focus on providing eco-friendly, fair-trade clothing while promoting ethical labor practices. The brand aimed to expand nationwide and needed a website redesign that aligns with its mission, improves navigation, supports new programs, and ensures an inclusive, user-centered experience.

The Problem

The original website had usability challenges, including unclear navigation, overwhelming content, accessibility barriers, and inconsistent design. User feedback highlighted pain points such as difficulty finding pages, lack of filtering options, poor readability, and frustrating checkout experiences.

The Solution

Using user personas, journey maps, and extensive audits, I created a modern, intuitive, and inclusive redesign. By applying Gestalt principles and reworking information architecture, the new design prioritizes clarity and emotional connection while supporting business growth and sustainability goals.

  • Strong visual hierarchy to guide visitors naturally

  • Call-to-action buttons: Get Started and Ready to Donate?

Research & Process

User Research

  • Personas: Kierra (slow fashion activist) and Sunny (hybrid influencer) helped prioritize features like filters and accessibility

  • Journey maps identified navigation and checkout frustrations, guiding design solutions

Information Architecture & UX Improvements

  • Renamed confusing navigation labels (e.g., "Sustain-A-Look" relabeled "About Us")

  • Added Marketplace filters and improved search function

  • Simplified checkout and ensured all pages had consistent design

Prototyping & Testing

  • High-fidelity prototypes developed in Adobe XD

  • Iterative testing cycles addressed contrast, typography, and layout consistency

  • Brand style guide implemented: earthy colors (#713C25, #BE6C42), Open Sans typography, and cohesive UI elements

Accessibility & Inclusivity

Redesigned to meet WCAG 2.1 standards: high color contrast, scalable fonts, alt text for images, and screen reader compatibility. These updates ensure a welcoming experience for all users, including those with disabilities.

Alignment with Business Goals

The redesign supports Sustain-A-Look’s mission of promoting ethical practices and environmental sustainability. Integrating the Recycled Clothing Program and partner stories strengthens brand authenticity and builds long-term customer loyalty.

Reflection

This project taught me the importance of designing for both emotional connection and functional clarity. It reinforced how accessibility and ethical storytelling can amplify a brand’s mission. Sustain-A-Look showcased how UX can drive meaningful change beyond screens and shopping carts.
